Getting Started as an AR

Fall/Spring Outdoor ARs

Information about becoming a referee can be found on the ISRC website:
New referees should register for an Entry Level Clinic. Referees must recertify each year. Existing referees should register for a Recertification Clinic.

After becoming a certified referee please purchase a Referee Starter Kit. Kits can be purchased online or from our local Score representative, Don Robertson. Click here to download Don's order form. Please note, that sometime after completing the course you'll receive a letter with your USSF id and a badge in the mail that will be applied to the uniform.

The AR Assignor for the LG Celtics is Tori D'Antonio. Please email her at [email protected] to be added to the email distribution list.

To AR for other clubs outside of the Celtics you'll need to join the Midwest Referee group on If you don’t already have a login, click on the green hyperlink in the upper left corner that states “New Official?” If you already have an account with another group, log in.

Grasshopper Referees

The Celtics run a Winter League at the Grasshopper in Hillside. High School Celtics players interested in becoming referees at the Grasshopper should email Elizabeth at [email protected] to get on the email distribution list. Certified referees will be paid $20 per game, referees who aren't certified will be paid $15 per game.



Effective with the 2020 season, ALL Referee certifications and re-certifications will be completed through US Soccer’s Learning Center.  Pre-course assignments are required for ALL in-person courses. This is a major change so please read the following carefully. 

Below are basic instructions and attached are step-by-step instructions (with screen shots) from US Soccer to help you create your Profile in the Learning Center. 

IMPORTANT:  Once you have created your profile, if you do NOT see any certification history on your account or the USSF ID # is different, a DUPLICATE ACCOUNT has been created by the US Soccer’s Learning Center system.  Send an email with the following information to [email protected]:

  1. First and Last Name
  2. DOB
  3. Address (including street, city, state)
  4. Email address used on profile
  5. USSF ID# shown on the profile you just created (will be 16 digits, i.e. 0000-0000-0000-0000).  Copy and paste from your profile.

To get started:

  • Use this PDF file to follow along.
  • Log in to the US Soccer Learning Center (
  • Click on “SIGN UP” in upper right corner
  • Enter your user information to set up your account.   We are told that a window may appear.  If so, we have been instructed that you should click the gren button to confirm you want to import the data.
If window does not appear, right click and print page, then record your password for future use, and then Click on “SUBMIT” and log out.
  • Log back in and if your license history is NOT showing, you can still proceed to complete the Background Check and Safe Sport Training BUT notify our office immediately with the bio information requested above.

·         Background check Required for all users 18 years of age and older. 

  • Background Checks must be submitted AND CLEARED before you can register for an in-person course or complete assignments required for in-person course. 
  • Background Checks might take up to 10 days to clear so DO NOT wait until the last minute to initiate your Background Check.
  • Cost for the Background Check is now $30, is valid for 2 years and is a rolling Background during those 2 years.
  • You can also complete the SafeSport Training course in advance.

·         Required for all users 18 years of age and older. 

NO PRE-COURSE ASSIGNMENTS can be accessed until your background check has cleared and you have signed up for a course.  ALL pre-course assignments must be completed to be eligible to attend the in-person course.

US Soccer has now re-classified referees as follows:

  1. Grassroots Course (formerly Grades 9, 8, 7)
  2. Regional Course (formerly Grades 6 and 5)
  3. Regional Emeritus Course (formerly Grades 15 and 13)

When signing up for a re-certification course, please choose the appropriate course.
